Best Organic Coffee Beans - Woman Drinking her Morning Coffee

Those searching out the best organic coffee beans are who I would call true coffee aficionados. While there are health benefits that go along with drinking organic coffee, many of us choosy coffee drinkers understand that they also have better flavor! (Although one could argue that as being a matter of opinion.)

Organic coffee beans are grown and handled in a very special way, without being subjected to harmful chemical pesticides or fertilizers.  In my humble opinion – this not only makes me feel a bit better about drinking it, but it also seems to really bring out the flavor of the beans, resulting in a very satisfying cup of coffee.

What’s here: On this page is a list of the top 10 organic coffee beans according to popularity (top-sellers with great ratings and reviews), as well as a few other tips including which organic beans are the best by category (organic decaf, fair trade, colombian, low acid, dark roast and French roast coffees).

PS: We have also created a list of “FAQs” and a video to help answer any questions you may have about organic coffee and what the hubbub is all about!

Probably the most memorable named coffee on this list, Death Wish has been one of the more popular coffees that I have seen for a number of years, and is known as “the world’s strongest coffee.”

If you really appreciate a caffeine boost in the morning (or any time of day), this is a “must try” coffee.

It might not be what you might expect when you try it – just because it has a strong caffeine content doesn’t necessarily mean that it doesn’t taste good! This coffee is proof positive of that fact.

Another wonderful “go-to” for organic coffee lovers – Equal Exchange “Love Buzz” is getting raves in the reviews I saw for its freshness and rich, smooth flavor.

The company has been around for some time also – always a good indicator that a coffee is truly delicious when it continues to rank so highly in sales and reviews for so many years. With all the new organic coffees that have come out over time, when you see a familiar “face” continue to pop up, you know that it is at least worth a try!

While this was not one of the best-sellers that jumped out at me on Amazon, I found it consistently a popular coffee with various health food stores online. Although I have never tried it (at this writing – I probably will), and it may not be as well known as some of the other brands of coffee on this list, it nevertheless makes the grade as truly being one of the best organic coffees available according to the information I have.

Another point to look at – other than the fact that the coffee is so highly rated by consumers – is the fact that this company contributes to farming communities in Guatemala, Honduras and Uganda. Love that!

8. Mayorga Café Cubano Dark Roast Organic Coffee Beans

Compare Prices:

N

Product Attributes

  • Cuban style dark roast
  • Bold, smoky and sweet flavor with hint of vanilla
  • USDA certified organic, non-GMO certified, kosher
  • Arabica beans sourced from Nicaragua, Peru and Honduras
p

Product Overview

Mayorga is a name that is rather new to my eyes, this coffee looks promising and indeed deserves to be added to this list!

From the Mayorga company, apparently the Café Cubano is their most popular among the lineup. The Latin roasting technique is slow, providing a deep, rich and bold flavor with low acidity.

I read a bit of the story about the owner of this company, which is rather interesting. Mayorga grew up in Nicaragua (which grows fabulous Arabica beans), became familiar with this coffee while living there, and brought the marvelous flavor to the US when he moved here.

9. Life Extension Rainforest Blend Organic Coffee Beans

A coffee packed with antioxidants! That is definitely something to love about this coffee – many of us need more antioxidants daily, and this seems to be a great way to get them.

Multiple reviewers rave about not only the flavor of this coffee, but the fact that it is so easy on their digestive systems. That is an important point for many of us out there – it can be a bit of a heartbreaker to have to give up coffee due to problems with stomach pain, diarrhea and other symptoms. This coffee can be a hopeful to solution for those of us coffee lovers with those types of maladies!

10. Lavazza ¡Tierra! Light Roast Organic Coffee Beans

Last update on 2021-06-17 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API

Compare Prices:

N

Product Attributes

  • Certified organic by several organizations, including USDA
  • Arabica beans, roasted in Italy
  • Best for espresso, but works with any coffee maker or technique
  • Light roast, rich flavor with hints of honey, malt and chocolate
p

Product Overview

Lavazza is a name well-known to the coffee drinking community. While this coffee was crafted with espresso-making in mind, it is nevertheless also ideal for regular coffee brewers.

However, on reading the recent reviews for this coffee (at least on Amazon), I would probably opt for one of the other ones on the list. What I saw from the people that wrote reviews turned out to be sort of “meh” is terms of the quality and taste. It’s not completely clear to me whether the cause of the negative reviews was due to the actual quality of the coffee, or if the coffee perhaps had been in stock too long (old) before being shipped to the buyers.

Best Organic Decaf Coffee Beans

Coffee beans are decaffeinated by certain types of processes – the question is, how is it done? When chemicals are used, then the beans are not truly organic. On the other hand, when water is used to remove caffeine, the beans remain organic and could also be considered more flavorful.

That said, here is a really great pick for decaf coffee drinkers:

Kicking Horse Organic Decaf Dark Coffee Beans

Last update on 2021-06-17 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API

Compare Prices:

N

Product Attributes

  • Decaffeinated using Swiss water process
  • Deep, rich taste with hints of hazelnut and chocolate
  • Great for multiple brewing methods including French press, cold brew, drip machine, and espresso
  • Arabica beans, fair trade
  • Kosher
p

Product Overview

When considering decaf coffee, the term “organic” has even more meaning. Not only are the beans grown and roasted with organic methods, but the caffeine is removed using natural methods without use of chemicals. (Note: If you have a question about the decaffeinating process for your beans, check the label.)

Sometimes “decaf” is equated as also having less taste, or even perhaps an “odd” taste – not these. Kicking Horse has the “decaf organic” thing down to an art form. Recommend!

Best Fair Trade Organic Coffee Beans

Many (perhaps most) organic coffee companies deal with fair trade practices – so the local farms receive fair and equitable treatment, and thus are able to continue their businesses.

This is an important point to consider when it comes to purchasing organic coffee – it helps out the organic industry in general so that we choosey coffee lovers can continue to indulge!

Here is an organic coffee that stands out in the fair trade market:

Tiny Footprint Coffee Fair Trade Organic Nicaragua Segovia Dark Roast Coffee Beans

Compare Prices:

N

Product Attributes

  • Nicaragua Segovia Dark Roast
  • Fair trade, USDA organic certified
  • Portion of sales goes to Mindo cloud forest in Ecuador, thus helping the environment (“carbon negative”)
  • Bold dark roast flavor, with hints of chocolate, apricot, fig and spice
p

Product Overview

The first thing that stands out to me on the label of this coffee is “50 lbs of good karma in every pound.” Good karma is right! This coffee company is not only fair trade, it also is known for its protection of the environment – they donate funds from their proceeds toward cloud forests to increase oxygen to CO2 ratio in the atmosphere.

But those might not even be the highlights of this coffee – it is also known for its wonderful flavor!

Best Colombian Organic Coffee Beans

Delicious, flavorful coffee depends in large measure on where it is grown. And Colombia has the ideal climate and environment for it! It’s no wonder that so many people will drink only coffee from this region!

From the research I have done, here are the best of the best organic Colombian coffee beans:

Java Planet Organic Medium Dark Roast Colombian Coffee Beans

Compare Prices:

N

Product Attributes

  • Single origin coffee beans from Colombia
  • Low acid, full-bodied taste with fruit overtones
  • USDA organic, no GMOs
  • Family owned and operated company
p

Product Overview

Lovely, low-acid taste is just the beginning of this coffee from Colombia – they are purely organic from the start of their single-origin sourced beans to their crafted roasting technique. And yes, it makes a difference that can be tasted and enjoyed!

This company is family owned, and goes the extra mile to not only please their customers, but also to deal only with fair trade, and only with farmers who keep the environment in mind with their practices.

Nice!

Best Low Acid Organic Coffee Beans

Many of us choose our coffees based on how acidic it is – I am one of them! For some people, coffee with low acid content makes a huge difference in how they feel and how their bodies react to the coffee (digestive issues, etc.)

A number of coffees on this page tout low acidity, but here is the one that stands out among them for its rich, flavorful roast:

Subtle Earth Organic Medium-Dark Roast Coffee Beans

Last update on 2021-06-17 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API

Compare Prices:

N

Product Attributes

  • 100% Arabica coffee, certified organic
  • Deep, rich, chocolatey flavor
  • Smooth finish, low acidity
  • Part of sharing certified program, sourced from Honduras
p

Product Overview

“Low acid” certainly does not mean “low taste!” In fact, quite the contrary. And Subtle Earth organic coffee has the best of both worlds – rich, flavorful and smooth coffee with a lower acid content. The rich, chocolatey flavor of this coffee has even the finickiest aficionados swooning! (If you pay close attention, you will likely also notice hints of caramel and honey!)

An interesting point that got my attention on this coffee – it is grown at an altitude that insects don’t thrive, so harsh repellents are not needed. (Whenever that problem does come up, one natural method of repelling bugs is to plant peppers!)

Best Organic Dark Roast Coffee Beans

Personally I always choose dark roast (or medium-dark roast) when it comes to coffee. I love the rich, deep flavor! And – dark roasts also tend to be more “tummy friendly.”

For those searching out what the best organic dark roast beans might be, here is the one that I found was the most popular with wonderful overall reviews:

Kicking Horse Grizzly Claw Dark Roast Coffee Beans

Last update on 2021-06-17 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API

Compare Prices:

N

Product Attributes

  • Rich, dark and decadent flavor (for the pickiest of dark roast lovers!)
  • Grown responsibly for the environment and farmers
  • Central and South American origins
  • Roasted with dark chocolate, cacao, hazelnuts and brown sugar – lovely flavor and finish
p

Product Overview

It is not an accident that Kicking Horse Grizzly Claw is also on the “top ten best” list above on the page – and also makes the “best of” dark roasts. This is a fabulous coffee, and the reviews customers leave for it stand out in the crowd for freshness and its lovely dark chocolate flavor.

How does one make a coffee that arrives so fresh when it arrives to the customer? Put it in well-sealed packaging right after brewing – you can tell the difference right when you open the bag!

Highly recommended coffee company, totally loved coffee.

Best Organic French Roast Coffee Beans

An interesting tidbit of information regarding “French roast” – it actually has nothing to do with where the beans are grown or roasted. It is related to the color of the beans from roasting that started being popular in Europe in the 19th century. The rule of thumb is – whenever beans are roasted to the color of dark chocolate, that is commonly referred to as French roast.

Just a fun bit of trivia for ya.

At any rate, here is the French roast organic beans that I came up with as being the best in terms of its overall popularity and ratings:

Stumptown French Roast Organic Coffee Beans

Last update on 2021-06-17 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API

Compare Prices:

N

Product Attributes

  • Rich “toasty” flavor without the “burn” taste with hints of bittersweet chocolate and clove
  • Roasted to bring out the full bean potential
  • Sustainably, responsibly sourced coffee
  • Known for its freshness – they even provide “roasted on” and “best by” dates on the bags
p

Product Overview

Right from my neck of the woods in Oregon! Stumptown is my favorite local coffee – I have been to their coffee shop in downtown Portland and was nothing short of extremely impressed.

I’ve been seeing their products recently in grocery stores, and this French roast makes the “best of” for all the French roasts out there. (Not a huge surprise to me – again I am rather familiar with this one.)

This company also contributes toward the environment and the community – you can’t go wrong with Stumptown French Roast!

Organic Coffee FAQs

Here are some commonly-asked questions about organic coffee, along with some helpful answers:

QuestionsAnswers
What is organic coffee?Regular (non-organic) coffee is one of the highest on the list of foods treated with chemicals. When it comes to organic coffee however, the beans are grown using natural methods and no man-made chemical fertilizers or pesticides. It is also roasted using only natural methods, without chemicals. In short, organic coffee is not only healthier to drink, it is also much better health-wise for the farmers during their work in the fields, as well as the surrounding environment.
Is organic coffee healthier than regular coffee? In short, yes - it is healthier in a number of ways. When one considers any residual chemicals on coffee beans from pesticides, fertilizers and roasting, and whether or not those chemicals could be harmful to health, it at least seems wise to avoid drinking coffee from said chemically-treated beans. As a note, it is also healthier for the farmers who grow the beans as well as the surrounding environment.
Are all coffee beans organic? No. When coffee beans are raised using harsh man-made chemicals for fertilizers or pesticides, and/or when they are roasted with techniques involving synthetic chemicals, they are no longer organic.

True organic coffee is grown from land that is naturally fertilized, and the beans are not sprayed with chemical pesticides, etc.
Does organic coffee taste better? That one is harder to answer, because it is definitely a matter of opinion. I believe in general most people will notice a rather significant difference in the flavor of coffee that has been made with organic beans. (I am one of those people - I only drink organic, and will never go back to “regular” coffee.)

From what I have read, it seems to be that a majority of coffee drinkers choose organic over non-organic for its taste. (To get a bit more info on this point, check out this article.)
What is certified organic coffee? There are various organizations that certify for organic by using a strict set of standards. The most well-known of these organizations in the US is the USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture).

To be called “organic” by this organization, there are strictly-held standards that involve everything from the seeds through all stages including packaging.

Final Note From The Author on Organic Coffee Beans

Best Organic Coffee Beans - Coffee Bean Bag and Cup of Cappucino

While I have to admit that I do make occasional trips to coffee shops and sometimes drink coffee that is not organic, when I buy coffee to keep and drink at home, it is always organic. And you know what? It tastes just as good or better than any coffee made in a shop (and believe me, I am very picky – in fact, I could be called what is known as a “coffee snob”).

There are so many good things to love about organic coffee beans, including the fact that when whole beans are ground just before brewing, it is so much more flavorful!

But enough of my rambling – I appreciate you visiting this page, and I hope it has been helpful for your own organic coffee drinking needs!
