Best French Roast Coffees - French Roast Beans and Coffee Bean Plant

Ahhh – organic French roast coffee (insert famous Homer Simpson “oooooohhhh” sound). For us true dark roast coffee aficionados: In order to zero right in on the very best, the question would be, “What are the best organic French roast coffees?

Interestingly, that question is not so simply answered – one thing I found out on my “deep dive” of different roasts of coffee beans is that the flavor and color of the roast can vary a bit (or more), depending on the viewpoint of who is roasting it, the beans they are using and what they actually consider to be “French roast.”

In other words, some brands roast their beans a bit longer and/or darker, some not so much. (Generally speaking, French roast definitely falls under the heading “darker of the dark roasts.”)

With all that said, the flavor of the different French roasts can vary quite a bit!

However – in terms of the brands of French roast organic coffee that people are buying the most and getting the best overall reviews, I am presenting the top 10 list of organic French roast coffees — being organic makes them even better than their non-organic counterparts.

What’s here: On this page is a list of the top ten picks in organic French roast coffees (whole bean and ground (as available) based on popularity, overall ratings and numbers of reviews. I have also added some helpful answers to frequently asked questions – you will also find a video that can clear up a number of questions you may have.

Product Overview

I have been seeing Equal Exchange organic coffees right at the top of the list of popular organic coffees for years now!  This brand is practically guaranteed as a favorite.

For those with sensitive “sniffers,” you will notice hints of brown sugar, gingerbread and bittersweet chocolate, while the flavor is chocolately and smokey.

I also love that this company practices fair trade with small family farms, and ensures that their coffees are sustainably grown with less of a “footprint” on our beautiful planet.

Product Overview

While not directly related to this roast specifically, the first thing that stood out to me about this company was the sheer number of roasts they create!  Just about kind of roast you could imagine, and they create some stellar decafs as well.

I also love that this company sources their beans from sustainable farms, and is family owned!

This coffee has been around for some years now, and its popularity doesn’t seem to let up much – it’s still known in the organic coffee community as one of the best out there.

I don’t think that you would be disappointed in this pick!

Product Overview

Peet’s coffees have become more and more popular over the years, and I am sure that is not an accident.

They appear to have extremely strict standards when it comes to sourcing and roasting their beans, and even give it the old “taste test” before sending it out for the public.

As is true with a majority of “best of” coffees, their beans are sourced from Latin American farming areas, with extremely eco-friendly methods.  A lot of effort goes into creating this coffee!

Overall really good reviews, with one mentioning that the coffee was no longer fresh after it arrived – but it seems from the remainder of the reviews that it wouldn’t be taking much of a chance to buy this one online.

This company was founded right in one of my own stomping grouds – Boulder, CO – a very trendy community with extremely high standards when it comes to food, and of course coffee.

Possibly best known for their espresso, Allegro doesn’t stop short on their quality of coffee.

This one has a rich, smoky flavor without the “burnt” taste.

Product Overview

Stumptown is very close to my own stomping ground, founded and still established in Portland, OR.  I have been to their coffee shops and was delighted at the fresh, rich flavor of their coffee!

This roast starts with organic beans, meticulously roasted for the perfect flavor – rich and “toasty” with no “burnt” flavor or aftertaste.

Rich, delicious coffee that also contains hints of clove and dark chocolate.

Defiitely recommend giving this one a try!

Product Overview

I got a kick out of reading the reviews for this Cameron’s coffee – one of the reviews touted it as “the life blood of immortals.”  It got even more entertaining as I read the review!

At any rate, to give you an overview of this coffee, it appears that it is indeed a good pick among French roasts.

I personally have not tried it, but based on what I read about it, including the ratings and the positive reviews, it is definitely something I want to give a go.

Per the company’s information, if you are a fan of Death Wish, Illy or Caribou coffees, you will enjoy this one as well.

Product Overview

I am lovin’ the name of this coffee!  While that is definitely not why I added it to this list, the coffee seems to live up to this name.

“Peace Coffee” appears to be a rather small company, apparently they haven’t had enough time to grow and spread to many markets but my prediction is that they will be around and more visible in the long-run.

Something that really caught my attention is the care that they take in the roasting process – they specifically dark roast it to give it a very special flavor with hints of chocolate, cherry and vanilla.

Yum!

Product Overview

I almost passed this one over to add to this list, but I am so glad I took a closer look!  I would definitely say that Jose’s Gourmet Organic French Roast is a worthy addition to this list.

What stands out to me the most is the description of the roasting process – they roast it to perfection, ensuring it is just dark enough to allow the oils and sugars of the beans to reach their peak – but not overdo it until it is “burnt.”

Like the #7 pick on this list, it is not available in very many places, so it can be a bit tricky to find.  But well worth giving a try – which is verified by the overall reviews.  Also, it has a 4.8 out of 5 star-rating (with just a bit over 100 ratings at this writing), which is a great sign that this truly is one of the best French dark roast coffees out there.

Product Overview

What an absolutely interesting brand of coffee!

While this company focuses on great tasting coffee beans, it also focuses on how to roast them in such a way as to provide its customers with some extremely healthy benefits!

For example, for those with gastrointestinal issues (or any issues that are complicated by high levels of acid), this is an absolutely wonderful pick.  There is 70% less acid in this coffee than in most others, and it turns out that their method of roasting is the secret.  And — there are plenty of antioxidants – 7 times the amount from green tea, and 5 times the amount compared to other coffees!

How nice that people who deal with acid issues with their bodies finally can have a great-tasting organic French roast coffee!

p

Product Overview

Mt. Whitney is a brand that I admittedly have not tried myself, but it looks like one that I will eventually at least give a go – I love coffee with deep, rich smokey (but not burned) flavor.

The beans this company uses are single-sourced, always ensuring the highest quality, grown in just the right region.

Also – one thing that this company does that some others don’t is absolutely ensure the freshness of their coffee.  They inject nitrogen to prevent oxidation as well as using aliminum bags (3 layers) and a freshness valve.

Nice pick – and possibly one of the organic French roasts in this list that will rise to higher heights in popularity.

Product Overview

This brand is also featured in the “non-decaf” organic coffee list here on this page – and like the caffeinated version, their decaf has many of the same special features.

Obviously based on the sheer number of sales and high overall ratings of consumers, this coffee is pretty darned good.  But what impresses me the most is the fact that the company is so conscientious of how the beans are grown – and how their sourcing farms and farmers are treated.  They don’t stop at “fair practice,” they actually go the extra mile to help the growers to expand their business and become more profitable.

If you are a decaf fan, give this one a go!

Product Overview

I have had the pleasure of drinking several of the organic French roast coffees on the list above, and I found them all really good.  But interestingly my everyday favorite coffee is not on that list.  (It does not fit into the most popular of the bunch, so I didn’t think it was appropriate to add it to the “official top 10”).

However, it is wonderful, and is my very own go-to for my morning coffee “kick.”

I do still drink other coffees, but with the combination of great taste and low price (which carries some weight with me), this definitely tops my own personal list.

It is a store-brand, created by Thrive Market, which is a membership site that is rather similar to an online version of Costco, but is a specialty store with healthy, organic and diet-specific foods that “organic” shoppers love.  It requires a yearly fee for the membership, but in my opinion, it’s well worth it!

Note:  You may or may not agree with me on how it tastes compared to others, but I wanted to share it with you in case you wanted to give this coffee (and Thrive Market) a try.

Organic French Roast Coffee FAQs

If you have wondered “Why is French Roast coffee called ‘French Roast’?”- or if you have had other questions about this roast (organic beans or not) – the chart below will likely be of some help to you.

QuestionAnswer

What is French Roast coffee?

French roast is one variety in the “dark roast” coffee bean category. This roast has a smoky, rich, full-bodied and quite often a sort of a “charred” flavor. It is a very popular choice among coffee drinkers.

The term comes from the color of the coffee, rather than the origin of the roasting or where the beans are grown.

From light to dark, French roast is definitely on the dark end of the scale. It has a fuller, richer flavor than lighter roasts, it also has slightly less caffeine and acid than lighter-roasted beans. It is a good choice for people who are looking for a coffee that will not cause the stomach to generate a lot of acid, thus is sometimes dubbed “tummy friendly.”

As a note, I have seen information that indicates darker-roast beans retain their freshness for a shorter period of time compared to lighter roasts, which is something to keep in mind if planning to purchase in bulk.

Why is French Roast coffee called “French Roast”?

The name “French roast” came about because this type of roast originated in France in the 1800’s. At the time in France it was popular to roast beans to the color of dark chocolate. French roast was quite popular across Europe in that period.

Does French Roast coffee have less acid than lighter roast beans?

Yes - generally speaking, darker roasts of coffee have a bit less acid than lighter roasts. Apparently, the darker the roast, the less acid the beans contain. Since French Roast coffee is one of the darkest roasts, it is less acidic than many others.

Does French Roast coffee have less caffeine than lighter roasts?

Yes. Generally speaking darker roast coffees (including French Roast) have a bit less caffeine in the beans after roasting compared to lighter roasts.

Who would like French Roast coffee?

Anyone who appreciates coffee with a dark, rich, full flavor with a bit of an edge to it. Also, someone who wants a coffee with less acidity, and a lower caffeine content than lighter roasts. So - if someone you know may need to lower their acid or caffeine intake, French roast might be the way to go.

What is the difference between French and Dark Roast coffees?

While “French roast” is a type of dark roast, the two terms are not interchangeable. “French” is among the darkest of the dark roasts. The scale of darkness among the dark roasts is as follows, with the “lightest of the darks” at the top of the scale, and the darkest at the bottom:
  • Viennese
  • French
  • Espresso
  • Italian
  • Spanish

What kind of coffee beans should be used for French roast?

Interestingly, the variety and origin of the beans don’t make a whole lot of difference when it comes to the flavor of French roast. Obviously, organic beans (grown without chemicals) are going to be more flavorful and healthy, but unlike lighter roasts of coffee, the taste of French (and other dark) roasts are more a matter of roasting time and color of the beans rather than the variety or region where they are grown.

French Roast Cold Brew Coffee – My Favorite Recipe

If you appreciate super-smooth, low-acid cold brew coffee, organic French roast beans truly make the best I have ever tasted.  Here is my very own recipe which makes my cold brew super smooth and yummy!

Best Organic French Roast Coffee - Pouring Cream into Fresh Cold-Brewed Coffee on Ice

What you will need:

  • Coarsely ground organic French Roast beans (the same grind that is used in drip coffee makers). Note – this grind allows the best release of oils and flavor from the beans without leaving residual grounds at the bottom of your glass after filtering
  • French press coffee maker– this is very much like the one I use and recommend (stainless steel – works great and has lasted me a long time)
  • Sweetener and milk/creamer as desired

Instructions:

  1. Put 7-8 scoops of coffee into the French press
Fill with water (stirring the coffee into the water gently while filling) to about ¾” to 1” below the rim
  2. Cover the top of the French press with aluminum foil or plastic wrap (don’t insert the plunger).  Leave covered and set aside for 1-2 days.  (Rule of thumb:  the longer it brews the stronger it will be.)
  3. Note: I don’t put the brewing coffee into the refrigerator, I prefer room temperature brewing, but either way works.
  4. After coffee is done brewing, gently stir the coffee – there will be a thin layer of grinds on the top, which should be stirred in.
  5. Insert the plunger gently and slowly into the press (pushing too hard can cause coffee to splash out the top).
  6. Pour into a glass – add ice
Add your favorite milk or cream and sweetener as desired (I use soy or oat milk and a few drops of monk fruit liquid sweetener.)
  7. Stir and enjoy!

Note:  I have used cold brew coffee makers and other methods to make cold brew coffee, but it has been my experience that a French press works the best by far.  It seems to brew the coffee a bit faster, and the flavor seems richer and smoother.
