Top 10 Daily Multivitamins for Babies Age 1

What exactly could be considered the best vitamins for 1 year old babies? That, at first glance, might seem like a simple question, but there are some important things to know about daily nutrition for kiddos in this age range:

  • What are the best kinds of vitamins for a 1-year old baby? – The best choices in one year olds’ vitamins are actually multivitamins since they sort of “cover the bases” especially when there may be a shortage of specific nutritional elements in a child’s diet. For example, if a young child is a “picky eater,” or is on a special diet (vegan, etc.) he or she might not get enough nutrients that might have been provided in specific foods.
  • What are the daily essential vitamins for 1 year olds? – The essential vitamins to look for in a good multivitamin for one year olds are Vitamin D, Vitamin Bs (B2, B3, B6, B12) and Vitamin C. (See “Which Vitamins Do One Year Old Babies Need?” section below on the page.)
  • Each child is different – While having a good multivitamin to give to a one year old is a good idea, your own child may also have special needs. For example, if your little one is not eating any meat, you might also consider a good protein and/or iron supplement. Children with low or no dairy intake will likely need an additional calcium supplement.
  • Is it dangerous to give 1 year olds vitamins? – Even on days when a child doesn’t need vitamins or minerals since he or she is getting adequate nutrition through food sources, it is highly unlikely that the child will overdose on a single daily vitamin dose.  My own personal conclusion is this:  If you give your child the correct dosage of daily multivitamins, there should not be any risk involved.  (Check with your pediatrician if you have any question or doubt about this.)
  • Daily dosage – It is important to not exceed a single daily dosage of vitamins – doing otherwise can actually prevent the vitamins from being absorbed properly and can create an imbalance in nutrition.  This could, in turn, result in other physical problems – so just make sure to stick with your daily recommended dose unless your pediatrician directs you to do otherwise.
  • Chewable or gummies? – It is actually not a good idea to give vitamin capsules, chewables or pills to children at or around one year of age since they present a choking hazard. For this reason, liquid supplements are the best choice, and there are a number of excellent ones to choose from (see top 10 list below on the page).

With all that said, there are most definitely daily vitamins that are better than others. I have done some good legwork on this and sought out what appear to be the top picks in vitamins for one year old babies – you can find them in the “top 10” list below on the page (first link on the menu).

Product Overview

A hugely popular multivitamin for babies around this age, and there are plenty of raves in the reviews about both the taste and how effective the supplement is.

While the NovaFerrum supplement does not contain Vitamin C, it nevertheless has the other recommended daily key vitamins (D and multiple Bs). Most little ones get plenty of Vitamin C in their daily food intake, and if not, you could check into getting an additional Vitamin C supplement.

Easy to give – either straight or mixed with juice or other beverage. Unlike other vitamin products, the taste makes it soooo easy for both kids and parents to love!

Product Overview

There are a lot of things to love about this vitamin supplement for kids. Probably what stands out the most to me is the number of nutrients – not only are the bases covered with essential key daily vitamins, but important minerals as well.

From studying up on the reviews, the flavor is not quite as good as the #1 pick above (NovaFerrum Multivitamin for Babies), however it is apparently undetectable for most little ones when added to juice or a smoothie.

Also, it is probably a great product for those kiddos with certain food sensitivities – while it does contain soy, it does not have any dairy, eggs, wheat or nuts.

Kids appear to love this supplement, and it is also getting great reviews for how much it actually helps people’s kids with their health.

Definitely seems to be a good choice on this list!

Product Overview

This multivitamin supplement is not only for one year old babies – it actually is effective for children up to 4 years of age. Easily dispensed and easy to measure with included syringe.

While I wasn’t able to find too many reviews for this product, in general the ratings and reviews are good. However, per the reviews there might be a bit more difficulty adminstering this supplement to a one year old (compared to other above comparisons on the list) due to the taste. Most of the reviews do not mention any problem with this, but this is something that you might keep in mind before making a final choice.

Product Overview

Another product from the B Protected brand (second one on this list). Similar to the earlier product mentioned (#8 – B Protected Pedia Poly-Vite Drops), but with iron added for those little ones who might be needing that extra boost of iron.

As a note, iron is an important supplement for babies at or around a year of age – if a little one is not getting enough through regular daily nutrition (7 milligrams daily is recommended), a supplement is definitely important.

Which Vitamins Do One Year Old Babies Need?

There are a few key vitamins to pay attention to for little ones at this age. If they are lacking these vitamins in their daily diets, they can alternatively be given multiple or individual vitamin supplements.

These vitamins include…

VitaminBenefitsFood Sources
Vitamin DHelps body absorb minerals; strong teeth and bonesTuna, eggs, mushrooms, fortified foods (milk, orange juice, cereals)
Vitamin CForms and repairs bones, tissues, blood cells; strengthens blood vessels; healthy gumsBrightly colored fruits and vegetables
Vitamin Bs (B2, B3, B6, B12)Converts food into energy, metabolism, healthy heart, helps nervous systemCheese, poultry, meat, salmon, eggs, green leafy veggies, bananas, potatoes

There are more vitamins to know about that are also important, such as Vitamin A and E – to check out the video below for a nice list of daily vitamins for babies and their food sources.

Which Minerals Do One Year Old Babies Need?

It is not uncommon for a baby to be lacking in one nutrient or another due to certain food likes and dislikes, special diets or possibly other physical causes. The most commonly looked-for minerals for babies in the one-year age range include calcium, iron and zinc.

Below is a chart that gives the “lowdown” on each of these minerals – how they help the body, and what foods they can be found in.

MineralBenefitsFood Sources
CalciumStrong bones and teeth; healthy nervous system and heartMilk, yogurt, cheese, soybeans, leafy green vegetables, almonds, sesame seeds, oranges
IronHealthy blood and oxygen levels Red meat, poultry, fish, pork, dried fruits, leafy green vegetables, iron fortified foods (cereals, bread, pasta)

Best Vitamin C for 1 Year Olds

Important for healthy blood cells and strong vessels, as well as building healthy tissues, Vitamins C is a critical nutrient for one year old babies.

The recommended daily dose at this age is 15 mg, and if your little one is not getting this much through daily food intake, a supplement is quite a good idea.

Below is the one that I personally recommend, and is also quite highly rated by consumers in general.

Product Overview

A great Vitamin C for kids is a must-have in any household, and this is the one to buy. (Not a bad price either – very affordable!)

With nothing artificial added, and naturally flavored (orange) just about any little one will love the taste – and parents will love that they are helping their babies along to build a healthy body and protect them with a natural immune booster.

Best Vitamin D for 1 Year Olds

From infancy, Vitamin D is quite an important element in a little one’s nutritional lineup. It is critical for assisting the body in calcium absorption which greatly helps with healthy teeth and bone development. It also is quite important for strengthening the immune system – proofing little ones against colds, flu, et al.

The best source of vitamin D is actually sunshine – but there are a number of reasons little ones will not get enough it from the sun. If using sunscreen anytime outdoors, for example, Vitamin D will not be generated from sunshine on sunscreen-covered areas.

At age 1 (and actually into childhood then adulthood), Vitamin D continues to be an important supplement.

Daily recommended dosage for one year olds is 600 IU.

Here is the one that I most strongly recommend, and the one that is far and away the most popular by consumer ratings.

(To get more choices in Vitamin D for one year olds – and to find out all about the importance of this vitamin for babies, visit our Best Vitamin D Drops for Babies page.)

Product Overview

A great product from a great company – I also recommend their multivitamins for babies!

This Vitamin D product is appropriate for little ones everywhere from 6 months to about 12 years of age.

The dosage is easy to work out too – each drop contains about 60 IU of Vitamin D, so to get 600 IU (the daily dosage for one year olds), you would add 10 drops to milk, juice or another beverage.

Safety Note on Vitamins for Babies and Young Children

Young children might confuse vitamins with candy since they are usually made to taste yummy. For this reason, it is extremely important to keep them in a high place, out of sight of young ones so that they don’t “help themselves” and accidentally get an overdose – which could potentially make them pretty sick.

Final Note from the Author on Vitamins for 1 Year Old Babies

In a perfect world, 1 year old babies and older children would get all of their nutritional needs handled with their daily food intake, but as a mother I can attest to this: It is not always easy to get kids to eat perfectly balanced, “all 4 food groups” meals! And I have yet to hear any child say, “Hey mom, can I please have green veggies for dinner? The greener the better, please!”

Hahaha! (Perhaps I should not giggle – I do know that some kiddos to have a fondness for most or all of the healthier foods, I just personally do not know too many of them.)

At any rate, whether your kiddo has a perfect diet – or if he or she is lacking in one or more vitamins or minerals – I believe that the list and info above on this page can give you the information and product/s you need to “fill in the gaps” on your own one year old’s daily nutrition.
