What exactly could be considered the best vitamins for 1 year old babies? That, at first glance, might seem like a simple question, but there are some important things to know about daily nutrition for kiddos in this age range:
- What are the best kinds of vitamins for a 1-year old baby? – The best choices in one year olds’ vitamins are actually multivitamins since they sort of “cover the bases” especially when there may be a shortage of specific nutritional elements in a child’s diet. For example, if a young child is a “picky eater,” or is on a special diet (vegan, etc.) he or she might not get enough nutrients that might have been provided in specific foods.
- What are the daily essential vitamins for 1 year olds? – The essential vitamins to look for in a good multivitamin for one year olds are Vitamin D, Vitamin Bs (B2, B3, B6, B12) and Vitamin C. (See “Which Vitamins Do One Year Old Babies Need?” section below on the page.)
- Each child is different – While having a good multivitamin to give to a one year old is a good idea, your own child may also have special needs. For example, if your little one is not eating any meat, you might also consider a good protein and/or iron supplement. Children with low or no dairy intake will likely need an additional calcium supplement.
- Is it dangerous to give 1 year olds vitamins? – Even on days when a child doesn’t need vitamins or minerals since he or she is getting adequate nutrition through food sources, it is highly unlikely that the child will overdose on a single daily vitamin dose. My own personal conclusion is this: If you give your child the correct dosage of daily multivitamins, there should not be any risk involved. - Daily dosage – It is important to not exceed a single daily dosage of vitamins – doing otherwise can actually prevent the vitamins from being absorbed properly and can create an imbalance in nutrition. This could, in turn, result in other physical problems – so just make sure to stick with your daily recommended dose unless your pediatrician directs you to do otherwise.
- Chewable or gummies? – It is actually not a good idea to give vitamin capsules, chewables or pills to children at or around one year of age since they present a choking hazard. While the NovaFerrum supplement does not contain Vitamin C, it nevertheless has the other recommended daily key vitamins (D and multiple Bs). Most little ones get plenty of Vitamin C in their daily food intake, and if not, you could check into getting an additional Vitamin C supplement.

It contains all of the “essentials” plus quite a number of additional helpful nutrients.
This is the second choice on this list of vitamins composed of whole foods, and is completely vegetarian based. It contains vitamins that support the immune system (Vitamin C and elderberry).
Dosage of this vitamin is not age-based, but weight based. For children under 50 pounds, give 1/2 oz., over 50 lbs give 1 oz.

While I wasn’t able to find too many reviews for this product, in general the ratings and reviews are good. However, per the reviews there might be a bit more difficulty adminstering this supplement to a one year old (compared to other above comparisons on the list) due to the taste. Most of the reviews do not mention any problem with this, but this is something that you might keep in mind before making a final choice.

As a note, iron is an important supplement for babies at or around a year of age – if a little one is not getting enough through regular daily nutrition (7 milligrams daily is recommended), a supplement is definitely important.

From infancy, Vitamin D is quite an important element in a little one’s nutritional lineup. It is critical for assisting the body in calcium absorption which greatly helps with healthy teeth and bone development. The best source of vitamin D is actually sunshine – but there are a number of reasons little ones will not get enough it from the sun. If using sunscreen anytime outdoors, for example, Vitamin D will not be generated from sunshine on sunscreen-covered areas.

The dosage is easy to work out too – each drop contains about 60 IU of Vitamin D, so to get 600 IU (the daily dosage for one year olds), you would add 10 drops to milk, juice or another beverage.
Safety Note on Vitamins for Babies and Young Children
Young children might confuse vitamins with candy since they are usually made to taste yummy. For this reason, it is extremely important to keep them in a high place, out of sight of young ones so that they don’t “help themselves” and accidentally get an overdose – which could potentially make them pretty sick.

In a perfect world, 1 year old babies and older children would get all of their nutritional needs handled with their daily food intake, but as a mother I can attest to this: It is not always easy to get kids to eat perfectly balanced, “all 4 food groups” meals!
